Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. Vitamin D principally functions as a prohormone. The nickname of vitamin D is sunshine vitamin. For, the body can create it as vitamin D3 when persons sunbathe. Even though vitamin D is usually known as a vitamin, it is not an essential dietary vitamin. No doubt, there are many dietary recources which are rich in vitamin D.These essential nutrients are eggs, fish, cod liver oil, liver and fortified milk. However, although we feed on these vitamin D sourced foods, all people can have enough vitamin D with the help of sunlight. The sun has an important role to the daily production of vitamin D in human bodies. In other words, direct sunlight ten or fifteen minutes once a day prevents vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D term is used to explain several different types of it. Two types are important for human body: Vitamin D2 called ergocalciferol and Vitamin D3 named cholecalciferol. Plants synthesize Vitamin D2. However vitamin D3 can be synthesized by the skin in human body as it is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from sun. Besides, functional foods can be fortified and supported both with vitamin D2 or D3. What is the function of vitamin D in mammals? Vitamin D maintains blood calcium and phosphorus level. Vitamin D helps bone development, bone mass formation and causes to increase bone mineral density. Apart from these, vitamin D protects the body from high blood pressure, cancer, osteoporosis and some other autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D deficiency causes several diseases.

In children, vitamin D deficiency is the most important and well-known reason of rickets which ends in skeletal structure deformities. In adults, vitamin D deficiency causes bone mass formation to weaken known as osteomalacia. Accordingly, it leads muscle pain and weakness. Who are under the risk of vitamin D deficieny? Those are at risk: Elderly population, prepubertal obese child, overweight and obese patients, exclusively breast-fed newborn infant, individuals who have intestinal malabsorption syndrome called cystic fibrosis and inflammatory bowel disease named crohn’s disease and persons who have a little chance of limited sun exposure. However, only dietary supplement may not be enough for vitamin D requirement of body. Vitamin D supplementation may lead to prevent potential early and potential late medical complications of human body. Vitamin D support and vitamin D supplement may prevent hereinbelow mentined disorders, diseases and genetic syndromes. Those which are potential early complications and potential late complications of vitamin D deficieny: Familial hypophosphatemic rickets, fanconi syndrome, partial or total removal of the parathyroid glands named primary hyperparathyroidism, overactive parathyroid called sekonder hiperparatiroidizm, due to hypoparathyroidism hypocalcemia, due to decrease in bone density osteomalacia- pediatric bone density, due to vitamin D analogs psoriasis, muscle weakness and pain, risk of osteoporosis, childhood renal osteodystrophy, fall prevention in the elderly, asthma, bone diseases, kidney diseases, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory concerns, diabetes, gastrointestinal issues, prevention and treatment of fractures, autoimmune diseases and all forms of cancer or carcinogenesis. Finally, sun bathing, being exposed to sunlight, having vitamin D supplement, choosing dietary courced rich in vitamin D would not lead someone against Vitamin D deficiency.
