Constipation is a term also known as costiveness, dyschezia and dyssynergic defaecation. Constipation is a word expressing movement disorders in bowel or defecation problems. In constipation bowel movements are uncommon or solid to pass. Constipation is a widespread origin of sorrowful defecation. Serious constipation may result in failing stools and gas to pass through bowels which is known as chronic functional constipation or obstipation. Obstipation may cause fecal impaction that may be result in bowel obstruction. Constipation most offenly happens when stool is urged to move through the digestive tract. The slow movement of stool causes them turn into hard and dry waste products of digestion. In general, bowel muscle contractions called intestinal motility propels stool. However, lack of adequate liquid or fiber-rich nutrient in one’s diet may reason constipation. Besides, in some cases muscle contractions of large bowel known as colon may be too slow. Slow intestinal motility is the cause of constipation. Besides, a person may practice dyschezia if the bowel muscles are not coordinated as it should be. This lack of coordination causes someone to strain with nearly all bowel movements insomuch as soft stools. This kind of costiveness is named as: Anismus, spastic pelvic floor syndrome, anal sphincter dyssynergia, pelvic floor dyssynergia, dyssynergic defecation and paradoxal puborectal contraction. Which factors may cause constipation with hard and dry stools? The reasons of intestinal slowdown may be: 1- Drinking inadequate water or lack of fluids. 2- Inadequate amounts of fiber-rich foods in one’s routine diet. 3- Ignoring bowel movement changes. 4- Physical inactivity. 5- Irritable bowel syndrome in short IBS. 6- Lifestyle or routine alterations e.g. aging, pregnancy, aging and journey, etc.7- Often laxative taking.

8- Diabetes, stroke, diabetes, Parkinson’s and thyroid disease. 9- Colon or rectum disorders as intestinal obstruction or colonic diverticulosis diverticulosis. 10- Drug therapy or medication for high blood pressure, pain, depression and Parkinson”s disease. 11- Hormonal disorder e.g. overactive or underactive thyroid gland. 12- Internal anal sphincter problems such as anal fissures or hemorrhoids. 13- Loss of body salts because of vomiting or diarrhea. 14- Spinal cord injuries, spinal cord diseases and spinal cord compressions. Constipation in children may perhaps be a sign of Hirschsprung”s disease which is a congenital defect that outcome of missing nerve cells in the lower intestine. However, children may suffer from constipation if they are unwilling or afraid of going to the toilet. Constipation in teen may be the result of ignoring and not noticing or forgetting bowel movements or eating fast food. Female and pregnant women are more commonly suffered from constipation and children more than matures. Constipation may be very annoying but it is not a serious illness. If it persists, you can take precaution such as: If needed use laxatives rarely. For laxative use may lead lazy bowel syndrome. Try to eat fiber-rich foods such as beans, fruits and vegetables. Limit fatty foods and sweets such as cheese, ice cream etc. Limit caffeine intaking which causes dehydration. Drink plenty of water and liquids. Physical activity and doing more exercises cause regular bowel movements. Exercises may be biking, swimming and walking. Try to notice bowel movements and do not ignore or delay. Stools may be kept soft and tidy by taking over the counter drugs such as fiber supplements. In order to not worsen constipation, please drink plenty of water or fluids while taking fiber supplements.
