What is asthma, ddyspnea or phthisic? Asthma means the shortness of breath and respiratory distress. Why breathing becomes difficult? For some reason, those who are short of breath have narrow and swell breathing passages. These types of airways create more mucus, and breathing becomes difficult. What are the asthma signs? The symptoms of dyspnoea are: Coughing spell, breathless, complains of dyspnea and wheezing, restless sleep caused by shortness of breath, chest pain and chest tightness. If a person has serious asthma, he/she may be a candidate of a life-threatening asthma attack. Asthma disorders can be controlled but can not be cured yet. Persistent and cronic asthma attacks can be controlled by avoiding asthma provocative factors with long-term follow-up and long term treatment. In an attempt to ease the asthmatic symptoms as flare ups called asthma exacerbation long-term asthma medicines can be used by medical advice. As to lower the severity of asthma exacerbation, quick relief inhaler medications can be preferred when asthma attack begins. The patient with asthma attack may often have the symptoms of asthma at nigh or midnight; in time of exercise. However, some people can experience asthma-like symptoms in some other cases. Asthmatic symptom known as exercise-induced bronchospasm attacks during exercise especially in cold weather and dry air. Work-related asthmatic symptom called occupational asthma or occupational asthma due to formaldehyde attacts in workplaces because of breathing gass, dust etc, and formaldehydes. Allergy-driven asthma named seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis is caused by allergens such as cockroaches, mold, pet dander, house dust mites, pollen, secondhand smoking or polluted air. If a person is visited the emergency-department because of asthma exacerbation, the self-reported asthma symptoms and expiratory flow index can be measured by a peak expiratory flow meter. A peak expiratory flow meter is a little device which checks how well the lungs work.

The diagnosis of asthma sometimes may be difficult both in adults and children’ pediactric asthma not only because of asthma ranges as bronchial asthma, chronic asthma, persistent asthma, occupational asthma but asthma stages that can vary from mild to severe. In addition to all these, asthma-like symptoms are often similar to other syndromes as emphysema, congestive cardiac failure, vocal cord disorder, bronchitis, bacterial or viral pneumonia, respiratory tract diseases and infections. How can be asthma diagnosed? The tests to diagnose asthma include lung function tests in short pulmonary tests. Spirometry test measures the narrowness of bronchial tubes. Peak expiratory flow meter measures breathe or vital capacity. Methacholine challenge is made if the initial lung function tests are trouble-free. Nitric oxide test is commonly used to measure the amount of a gas named nitric oxide in the breath. Difficulty in breathing known as asthma, apnoea, dyspnea, respiratory disorder or orthopnoea is in irreversible disease category. However, treatment of asthma attacks is possible by keeping symptoms under control with long-term medications. In other words, long-term asthma medicines prevent and lower the risk of asthma attack or severity of asthma exacerbation. The patient diagnosed with asthma, should watch for and be aware of his/her triggering asthmatic factors, signs of asthma flare-ups in order to avoid attacks. In case of an asthma attack, asthma exacerbation or asthma flare-up, he/she can need to exercise a quick-relief inhaler immediately.
